No. 6,652,585, which claims the benefit of the filing date of Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 60/272,102 filed on Feb. 28, 2001. Abstract

A spine stabilization system includes a flexible member attachable to a portion of the spinal column. The member includes components that are oriented and function similar to the natural fiber orientation of the anterior longitudinal ligament and annulus tissue. The use of components resist loading applied by extension and rotation of the spine, while the flexibility of the member does not subject it to the compressive loading of the spinal column segment to which it is attached.

  1. 1. A kit for spinal stabilization, comprising: a device positionable in a disc space between adjacent vertebrae of a spinal column; and a flexible member attachable to each of the adjacent vertebrae, said flexible member including a number of components configured so that when said flexible member is attached to the adjacent vertebrae at least one of said number of components extends in a first direction that parallels an anterior longitudinal ligament of the spinal column and at least one of said number of components extends in a second directions that mimic the fiber orientation of annulus tissue between the adjacent vertebrae.
  2. 9. A kit for spinal stabilization, comprising: a device positionable in a disc space between adjacent vertebrae of a spinal column; and a flexible member attachable to each of the adjacent vertebrae, said flexible member including means for replicating a natural fiber orientation of an anterior longitudinal ligament and annulus tissue between the adjacent vertebrae when said flexible member is attached to the adjacent vertebrae.
  3. 18. A kit for spinal stabilization, comprising: a device positionable in a disc space between adjacent vertebrae of a spinal column; and a flexible member attachable to each of the adjacent vertebrae, said flexible member including at least one mesh layer having a number of components configured relative to one another so that when said flexible member is attached to the adjacent vertebrae at least one of said number of components extends in a first direction that parallels an anterior longitudinal ligament of the spinal column and at least two of said number of components extend transversely to one another and in second and third directions, respectively, that mimic a fiber orientation of annulus tissue between the adjacent vertebrae.
